I am one of those who dreaded
Y2K.
I didn't buy a generator or extra drinking water, but I was almost
overcome
throughout late 1999 by a feeling of impending doom. I cannot tell
precisely
what I was apprehending, but it was awful all the same.
Come January 1, 2000, I was washed over by a wave of relief - my favorite emotion. Since we were now living in the "future", I felt ready for something different. I decided to make an old dream of mine come true. I had always been intrigued by Laos, a small country that is sort of Thai, sort of Vietnamese, sort of French... Laos had recently reopened its borders after years of isolation. It was the perfect opportunity for a 10 day escape: my first true vacation in 15 years. Y2K had left us unscathed, but the very day I left for Laos, the Nasdaq collapsed. I remember thinking "now I did it!" How could I think the world would go on undisturbed if I took 10 days off? The photos are copyright free for any decent use. A link to the travel agency that I used, and some practical information can be found on the last page of the travelogue. Oliver Hazan
