The Lenca
people are the largest ethnic group in Honduras. They live in the
mountainous edge of the country to the West. The Lenca Highlands are a
poor region
with a rich past and magnificent natural assets. Only recently have
major roads been reliably paved. On the next page, you will see some of
the splendid colonial churches in the area. The Lenca Highlands are dominated by two colonial towns with a long history, Gracias Lempira and Santa Rosa de Copán. Each town has hotels and simple restaurants, and each makes a fine base from which to discover the smaller villages thereabout and the famed Celaque National Park. Gracias Lempira, an attractive town to be sure, is a rural center: you will find fertilizer and animal feed, but no cappuccino there. Santa Rosa is larger and an administrative center. As a consequence, it is also a bit more developed. |
