Honduras has a long Atlantic coast to the North, and a short Pacific coast to the South. The Atlantic coast has a near-Caribbean flavor, and it is dotted with natural reserves. Tela, the former center of banana  exportation, is a pleasant and sleepy town within easy access  of several  natural reserves and Garifuna villages.

Tela is located less than two hours away from the industrial center of the country, San Pedro Sula.

The Garifuna are an ethnic group of mixed ancestry who live on the Caribbean coast from Belize to Nicaragua. They descend from Caribbean people, and from African slaves, the latter possibly shipwrecked. Visits to natural reserves around Tela usually include a long stop, including lunch, in a Garifuna village.
