The Ingapirca Ruins (Ruinas de Ingapirca) are the most significant archeological site in Ecuador. Originally settled by the ancient Cañar civilization, Ingapirca became a major Inca outpost when the Inca empire absorbed the Cañar.

Some of the compound was destroyed following the fall of the Inca empire during the Spanish conquest. Much of Ingapirca survives as ghostly outlines. Still, in the middle of the site stands the imposing Temple of the Sun, the only known round Inca structure.

Ingapirca is located two hours North of Cuenca by bus, near a nondescript village. This explains why Ingapirca doesn't have the réclame of Machu Picchu in Perú, which benefits from an outstanding natural setting.  All the same, Ingapirca is a magnificent site where you can marvel at Inca walls - wonders of beauty and engineering.
