![]() Ecuador is a small country, but travel
between regions can be slow. You are likely to have to spend one night
midway, in some unremarkable town like Riobamba. Still, most towns have
some attractive features: interesting architecture, a stunning
geological setting, and great ice cream!

at night, the Iglesia de San Antonio (left). Many of the older
buildings have been repainted in bright colors. Tall volcanoes surround
the town.

![]() One night in Rio... bamba that is Riobamba is renowned as the starting point
for a scenic train ride. However, the train is not a train any more:
today, the ride is aboard an autoferro, the mule of transportation
modes, basically a bus on tracks (right).
