N E X T J O U R N E Y . O R G

In years past, deciding slowly where to go next to get bitten by bugs, to discover dusty museums, and to borrow a life for a few days had been half - or more - of the fun. However, the year 2010 was different. Both at home and at work, matters were unsettled, and I felt unworthy of making frivolous plans. I came ever so close to booking a ticket to Bangladesh, Colombia, or Suriname, but something always kept me. (Until the last minute, I was thinking that the best option for my week off could be to commit myself to an chic mental clinic, the kind that advertise in The New Yorker, you know, the kind where Oscar Levant would stay.)

And then, time was up. As it happens, my "alternate choice" had forever been the Deep South. I knew that there would be much for me to enjoy, not least being a better understanding of the Civil Rights movement. I happened to have miles to spare, and I could get to Montgomery, AL, for $10.

In the end, my Southern circuit was second to none. It was as flavored a discovery as any other. My conclusion - always the same after a good trip - was that I could be happy living there.
